Services

Expressions Youth Center provides a number of services and support to individuals who are homeless, aged out of foster care, and involved in the juvenile justice system. For those who have been involved in the criminal justice system, our primary goal is to provide a complete menu of services, activities, workshops, seminars, and referrals to support organizations. Among the programs we offer are  Career Readiness, Mastering Money Management, Fit Living, Knowing Your Rights, and Housing Empowerment.

Career Readiness

The E.Y.C job readiness program is providing every avenue for a participant‘s success in the job market.  It is understood that although someone may need job, but might not be prepared to retain that employment, nor be equipped to cope with work place challenges. E.Y.C recognizes the importance of skills training.

This begins with assessing the participants ‘work readiness.  This is a one-day introductory workshop that takes a no-nonsense, no excuses approach to career readiness. This workshop digs into the root causes of a person‘s inability to obtain and keep a job.  This can be painful and met with resistance, however, helping participants develop the attitudes and workplace behaviors they need to overcome employment obstacles and transform their lives is essential.

Our introductory workshops are small in nature, where 15 participants would attend.   This allows for a more attention on an individual instead of a large group of people.      We realize that everyone’s needs are different so, the approach to job readiness skills will be design around their needs.    At registration, we learn about each individual and the challenges before they attend the introductory workshop.   Once in the workshop, participants will address: overcoming their past, skills discovery, completing an application, networking, resume development, dressing for success, interviewing, and becoming a model employee.

During these workshops, we learn the obstacles the participants are facing while seeking employment like, lack of computer skills, unfavorable housing situations, etc.  We help provide the appropriate resources in order to overcome those obstacles.   The sole purpose of these workshops is for the participants to leave with a heightened sense of self-esteem.    During their search for employment, the participant will be engaged in a dialogue with one of our mentors to guide and encourage along their way. In addition, collaboration with the other organizations in order to assist our clients is important.

E.Y.C support continues well after a job is secured. It is proposed that mentors and volunteers will provides a wide range of support services, tailored to meet each client ‘s needs.  Upon completion of the of the various E.Y.C workshops, each client will create an individualized program plan with goals and objectives, timelines, what support services are needed, and a plan for achieving the written plan. A plan of action will involve identifying what resources and referrals are available to the client as the job search continues.  This could include but not be limited to childcare assistance, transportation vouchers, interview clothing, and assistance with resume writing.

Money Management

Expressions Youth Center believes that a person must have guidance in all areas of their reentry experience in order to be fully empowered.   Once a person gains employment, the next reentry phase is to possess the ability to manage their financial resources.     Our financial empowerment class is a program that enables our clients to become financially independent.      The goal of this program is to provide the necessary tools for our clients to manage their financial resources and creating a financial future.  We are offering the following seminars:

  • Your Story About Money
  • Open A Bank Account
  • Create A Budget (“Personnel, Business)
  • Repair Your Credit
  • Save For Your Future (House, Car, etc.)
  • Invest In You (401K, Retirement, etc.)
  • Start a business (Entrepreneurship)

We are currently seeking collaborative opportunities with other organizations, which align with our mission, in offering this curriculum to returning citizens (ex-offenders) within our community.   Please feel free to contact us utilizing the form below if your organization expresses such interest!

Housing Empowerment

Expressions Youth Center understands that housing is one of the most important factors for gaining stability after obtaining employment.

Moreover, sometimes, even before employment has been gained for that individual, this is a critical component.

Currently, we have a 38-bed facility that an individual can rent monthly or weekly; some units will be reserved for our housing assistance program. During registration, applicants will be screened to see if they qualify for assistance.   We seek to connect with other housing programs to assist if we are full.
